Classic Hairstyle - Get the Look

Matt Bomer - Old School Style

This classic 'slicked back' hairstyle never goes out of fashion. If you're after something versatile, that's great for formal and everyday situations, then look no further.

The Basics Time Required - 5-8 minutes

Tools - Matt Styling Wax & Blowdryer. To pull of this look you'll need medium length hair. Essentially this hairstyle is a swept back look with a clean finish. You can style it wavy, or with a straighter finish.

The Haircut

Take this photo to your hairdresser and get them to cut it to style. You'll need to ask for volume on the sides and top so that it doesn't look too flat or thin. Make sure they leave a long fringe as you'll need it to create the front wave.

In Hairdressing terms this is a classic medium length men's haircut with volume in the front and slicked back sides.

Styling the Hair

Before using any styling product on your hair you'll want to make sure it's thoroughly dried. Use a blowdryer to apply lots of volume to the roots of your hair. Simply dip your head upside down and dry the roots on a high heat for 30 seconds. Use the blowdryer on a lower heat after this, with your fingers raking back the hair into shape. (make sure you are pushing the hair backwards) The best product for this kind of look is a matte styling wax.

1. Apply a pea sized amount of product to your fingertips.

2. Rub your finger tips together until there are no lumps and the product is warmed up.

3. Using a quick. zig zag raking motion from the back to the front of your head, apply the product to the roots of the hair. Make sure you evenly distribute the product.

4. Apply more product to your finger tips. Focussing now on the front of the hair use your fingers to push the hair backwards in a raking motion, lifting your hands upwards to create the wave.

5. Apply product to the sides pushing backwards in a raking motion to create the swept back look. Do the same to the back of your head, moving from the top to bottom.

6. Use a small amount of product/hairspray on the front wave (swept back fringe) and run your palm over it lightly to make it appear smooth.

7. Get your phone ready for all the ladies wanting your number.

Suited Face Shapes

Medium length hairstyles are suitable for most face shapes. To determine whether this hairstyle suits you, use the Face Shape chart. Any face shape can pull off this look, some however will need to keep the sides a little shorter to ensure their face doesn't appear 'blocky' or 'wide'.
